THE YALE TELESCOPE
OFFER TO NEW ZEALAND REPEATED. The ‘Star’ is informed that the author!* ties of Yale University have written again, renewing their offer to the New Zealand Government, the New Zealand Astronomical Society, or any other body or persons who may be interested in the erection of an observatory in the dominion, the offer being to contribute and send a refracting telescope of 26in diameter, also to send and maintain astronomers to do stellar work. The Yale authorities appear to be not only in earnest, but anxious to make the gift. Several rites in Otago have been mentioned. and a certain amount of preliminary sky-testing Iras bean made with the object of finding tho best average of clearness. Pembroke. Blnckstono Hili,_ Alexandra. and Windsor are amongst the sites discuoreq. A large part of the correspondence is so far of a confidential nature, but it is permissible to mention that tho Government will probably be asked to give a small sum to enable the telescopic sky-testing to be completed. Further information will be available most likely in a few weeks’ time.
