Tiro Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.P., arrived from Invercargill last evening.
Mr IVm. F. Barker, only son of Mr W. T. Barker, of Ravensboume, has been appointed to the position of inspector of aviation landing stages in Australia. MiBarker recently distinguished himself as clerk in charge of the erection of a wireless station on Willis Island, for the purpose of warning vessels of approaching cyclones. After the war (in which he served with the A.1.F., gainng the D.C.M.) he settled in Australia, holding various positions in the Federal Government. Hia present position entails the inspection of all aerodromes in the various States. The Honolulu 'Advertiser’ contains a report of the death by accident of Mr L. You Tempsky, onlv son of the Maori War hero, Major Yon Tempsky, who with other officers and, men were ambuscaded at To Ngutu-o-te-manu, near Kapiini, and killed. The late Mr Yon Tempsky was born in Glasgow in 1858, and came with his father to New Zealand. He afterwards proceeded to' Maui, Hawaii, and engaged in ranching. Some lime ago the late Mr Von Tempsky paid a visit_ to the scene of his father’s death, being accompanied by the late Mr Flynn, ot Hawera, a Maori War veteran, member of the To Mutu Domain Board, and', with bis daughter, spent an interesting time in the district. He is survived, by a son, three daughters, and a sister, a Mrs Kettle, of Napier. Mr W. Ferguson, of Sydney, who accompanies the M.C.G. team on their present tour through New Zealand, has had lengthy experience as scorer. _ He has kept the record for the Australian Board of Control for some years past, and has made four trips to England with Australian teams, in addition to New Zealand and South African tours, Cr H. L. Tapley has had numerous requests to stand for the mayoralty in April next. Ho is considering the matter. Miss Rita Beck, of Dunedin, competed with success in the dancing events at the Wellington Caledonian Society’s championship meeting, scoring three seconds and two thirds. , , A London cable states that the late Lord Marcus Beresford bequeathed his horses to His Majesty the King. Air Maurice Morgan, who was fatally injured in a motor accident near Taihapo on Christmas Day, was well known in Dunedin, where for many years ho was in the office of Messrs Mondy and Stephens. He left this city to take up a position in Napier, and was a resident there at the time of bis tragic death. _Mr Morgan, who was known to his intimates as “Polly,” played football for the Dunedin Chib and cricket for Dunedin, and afterwards Mornington. Ho was of a quiet disposition, ami very popular. Messrs J. Shepherd arid A. Galland left by the second express this morning. The. former has been chosen in tbs New Zealand team, to meet the Englishmen in the first test match, which begins on Saturday at Wellington, while Galland is twelfth man for the same match.
