TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

TOURNAMENT AT HASTINGS. [Special to the ' Stah.’] HASTINGS, December 26. In Hie afternoon the clouds cleared away, and a. perfect afternoon resulted. Tho sweltering beat found players out who were not in Hie best of training, many ladies feeling faint, and tho men being “ all in.” During the afternoon Laurcnson, the present holder of the title, was playing in great form. Although .unneeded, the champion produced a great repertoire of strokes, his court tactics leaving him the easiest of placements against Miiburn. Ollivier gave an indifferent display against If. W. Martin (Victoria College), ■preferring to lake things easy on tho back line, waiting for bis opponent to make faults. L. France, although not called' upon to give of his best, did not seem to bo up to the standard of Laureuson.

Mrs (Melody and Wallace gave a very fine exhibition against Mrs Scott Watson and Shaw. They needed every stroke to win, however. Airs Melody was slicing her drives more than usual, but her lobs were poor. Wallace was timing beautifully, and it was his sensational kills which proved tho deciding factor in a hard-fought battle. The winning pair were much more used to each other’s--'.play, having wou four provincial championships. Miss Lloyd and l Allison wore a very good impromptu- combination, and both proved very freely in their stylo. They were too good a combination for Miss Welsh and 'M’Dougall. The Wellington lady put up a good fight, buti M’Dougall was very patchy against such a fonnidable combination.

Miss Lance again .proved her wonderful test match temperament when' she defeated Miss Well wood, a promising local girl. Things went awry with the New South Wales lady for a time; but she never worried, and was content to merely return the Hastings girl’s low*, fast drives, and after being .behind ran out easily 6-3, 6-0 by virtue of a wonderful allround game, Mrs Lascelles went one further in the competition by proving her undoubted superiority over Mies Ormond. The New Zealand Association to-day decided that the match New South Wales v. New Zealand ladies 'bo played at Wellington on January 12 and 15. The visitors will participate in an invitation tournament at Christchurch on January 19 and 20, and will then leave direct for Auckland, where they will play in the Auckland Association’s tournament.
