MOTHER’S SAD STORY IN COURT WITH SICK INFANT. When standing in the Richmond Court (Melbourne)) the other day waiting for a case to be called, in which she was appearing as a witness, Police-woman Madge Connors saw a woman who had an infant in her arms crying bitterly. The woman told her (says the * Argus ’) that the baby had pneumonia, and that she was unable to take the child to a hospital that morning as she had received a summons from a money-lender to attend the court and explain why she had not repaid money lent to her. The lips of the infant, which was wrapped in a piece of old blanket, wore purple, and it was gasping for breath- Mrs Connors approached representatives of "the moneylender and had the case called on immediately. The woman explained that her husband was in the hospital, and she had no money. Her only son, who' hi£3 been her main support, had had the top of his finger severed on Wednesday and was unable to work. She agreed to pay off the debt in weekly instalments of 2s. With the assistance of Mrs Connors the woman and her infant were placed in a spring-dray, driven by her son, and taken to the Children's Hospital.
