A witness belonging to the Railway Department made the amazing statement in the Police Court at Auckland (says the ‘ Sfar ’) that the practice of destroying all old tarpaulins, which was caustically criticised some time ago, was still adhered to, and that under no cirounn.ataucos were railway goods sold. This very naturally prompted Mr Poyuton, SAT,, ;o observe that it was a, “silly thing,” to v/hioh the witness replied that no such goods were soild when they became second-hand, so that stolen property could readily be identified, all tarpaulins being numbered. “It is a silly thing,” repeated the magistrate, “one of those ted kipto businewes. It might eiive the defendant a little trouble to burn these tarpaulins, but numbers of farmers and others would find them very useful and be glad to buy them at a reasonable price, I should,.think. It seems ridiculous and wasteful to burn such things.” Our wonderfully managed railway system (the journal declares), which is declared to bo worked on a system of the best economy, may possibly lake the hint and in future increase its revenue by decreasing its fires. It should bo an easy matter to so privately mark material sold as second-hand that it could bo identified at a glance, as distinct from stolen property, A medical authority haa stated that cano sugar is ruining the teeth and constitutions of ° New Zealand children.
