CHRISTMAS FESTIAVL

A novel entertainment in the form of a Christmas tea, under the auspices of the younger men’s department of the Y.M.0.A., was held last evening, when over 100 young men crowded! the hall to celebrate the festive occasion. The room and tables were attractively decorated with balloons, streamers, and holly, and imitation snow on lattice work. The prose’hce of three men in the costume of English butlers with the conventional “ muttonchop ” whiskers added immensely to the amusement of the event.

The Hon. Q. M. Thomson presided at the function that followed, and after' referring to the season of universal popularity, called on Mr J. Ik Waters, tho president of the association, Mr Waters expressed the Board of Directors’ message of greeting, and assured those present that the surest way to have a jolly Christmas was to see that others received a blessing. The Rev. Tnllooh Yuille gave tho address of tho evening, taking as his subject ‘ The Spirit of Christmas.’ In an interesting way, the speaker showed that the spirit of Christmas found expression in its purest form only among men of goodwill. The Christian faith was not a religion of peace at all costs. It was a fighting faith. Since faith constituted l the basis of a permanent goodwill, w© had to see that our faith took on the whole armour of Cod, and strove valiantly to conquer the earth for Him Whom we called the Prince of Peace. In the midst of strife and, evil, the Church of Christ had to resist tlie wrong and stand for-the right. This was the spirit of Christmas. Bait there was sometliing else; the spirit of unselfishness and brotherly kindness should rise iu every man's heart during this glad season. The love of man for man was symbolical of the embracing love of God towards man in sending - His Son to the world.

In mentioning the fact that several leaders in the department would be transferred to the senior division, Mr Adair, tho secretary, urged these young men to give the same enthusiasm and time in establishing the work in their new field. He spoke in appreciation (of the unselfish service they) had rendered during the past two years. During tho evening appreciative ,_songs were contributed by Muss Molly Vickers and Mr Mitchell, while several instrumental selections were given by Messrs Roi Don, D. Nelson, and Ik Hunter. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman and the committee of young ladies, whose services meant much to the success g| fche $ verting.
