THE MESSIAH
The chorus “For unto us a Child is born, unto ns a Son is given, and the government shall be upon Ills shoulder; and His mime, shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Might y Cod, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” has always been recognised as the grand feature of the first part, and its phrases may truly be said to have become household words. It embodies the free and gladsome exclamation of a multitude relieved from depressing influences by the realisation of their fondest hopes—the birth of the long-foretold Saviour. Tlio principal melody is opened in the symphony, taken up by the soprano and other parts in succession, and the “ glad tiding ” are responsively interchanged till the chorus and accompaniment unite in an ecstatic burst of harmony, destined to endure for all ages. The Dunedin Choral Society, who give Handers oratorio ‘The Messiah ’ in His Majesty's Theatre on Monday and Tuesday next, have given special study to this and other (lionises of the composer a masterpiece. The demand for reserved scats is very good.
