FOOD VALUES OF WHAT WE CONSUME, BY DR J. H. BUCHANAN. gmes we regard Bure Carbonated Waters and Cordials as Rood Products, it is well to consider just what their food value really is. One method of doing this is to determine the amount of energy that will be the body. The body is hko a steam engine. It requires fuel to keep it going. This fuel or energy is furnished the body in three forms, ell of which are constituents of the food. These forms are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. From a definite amount of each of these foods the body will derive a definite amount of energy. This is measured in calories, which means a definite amount of heat. A calorie, ns we uso the term, means the amount of heat that will raise I.OOOgm of water 1 degree Centigrade. . This is just a little less than a quart of water. Carbohydrates when burned in the body as food furnish about 1,860 calories per pound. In an ordinary size bottle of pure carbonated water there are about 87 calories. On the pound basis this would amount to about 167 calories per pound. Compare this with the calories found in a number of more ordinary foods, as follows; — ... _ 184- caloriea per lb. 169 ~ .1 w 16» ,» ». - 167 „ #*• 165 ~ 99 ... 162 ~ 9. ... ... 158 „ „ - ... 143 „ ... 124 „ ... _ 110 m *—* 104 ~ ... ... 100 .9 ,9 ... -• 89 ~ ~ ... 87 ~ „ ... ... 84 ,9 ... ™ 63 ~ ~ ... 65 i, 9, m. ... 45 9. 99 Thee* figures show very welt that the food value of pure carbonated waters Is an item of importance. With respect to nutrition, they bare other values as well.—Dr J. H. Buchanan, lowa State College.
