MANCHESTER UNITY

Members of the M.U.1.0.0.F. m Kattanga.ta wore on fete on Saturday, NovemIher H, when the first female branch of Hie order in the Otago district was formally opened under the banner of the M.U. The function was a successful one, and seldom have such scenes of enthnsia,sm been witnessed locally. The District (Executive (Prov. G.M. Bro. Jno. ■ Will, >Prov. D.G.M. Bro. J. A. Robson, Prov. IC. S. Bro. J. A Hopcraft, Prov Treas. Bro. A. SHgo, and P.P.G.M. Bro. T. Middlemans) controlled proceedings, and was ably assisted bv P.P.G.M. Bro. Sherwood (Southland district), Sisters Gockroft, Veitoh, and Fraser (Loyal Hearts of Oak Lodge, Invercargill), P.P.G.M. Bro. C. J. Wood, and officers of visiting lodges. The granting of the dispensation and formal opening took place at 6 p.m., after which the candidates for initiation were duly presented and received into the order with the usual formalities. The initiation ceremony over, the Oddfellows' toast, was enthusiastically sung •by the visitors. The installation, of officers was next proceeded with, the Prov, G.M. delivering the charges to the various officers most impressively. The principal officers are:—N.G., Sister F. •). Hislop; V.G., Sister E. Hadler; u.S,, ISister B. 'M'Caughern: warden, Sister C. Gihnour; treasurer, Sister MT’odyen ; per. sec., Sister L. Middlemass. The ceremony was attended bv: 196 members of the "order. In his address to the lodge the Prov. G.M. said that that day marked an epoch in the history of the order in Otago. Kaitangata, had always been looked upon as a very live district. It had la strong male lodge, a strong juvenile lodge, and now fresh lustre was added by the addition of a female lodge. Great things were expected of the ladies: ho was certain they would not prove disappointing, He congratulated them on their successful opening, and washed them lons life and happiness. N.G. Sister F, J. Hislop in a neat speech said the lodge would endeavor to carry u the work of the order, taking as its bads Die (rue principles of philanthropy and henryoJence, carrying comfort to the homes of the bereaved, caring for the @'k, helping to raise humanity, and generally furthering the great cause. An adjournment w-as then made to the Soldiers’ Hall, where adequate preparations had 1 been made for a banquet. A lengthy toast list, interspersed with a number of specially-selected musical items, was successfully negotiated and the repast dona full justice to. The accompaniments were played by Sistera ■M'Caughom and Fraser. The banquet over, a dance was held in the club hall, where a very enjoyable time was spent. This proved a fitting finale to the celebrations.

A (jmet evening was spent at the usual fortnightly meeting of Loral Caversha.m Lodge. P.G. Bro. Russell submitted a comprehensive -report, of the proceedings of the Dispensary Committee meeting, for whioh he- received the thanks of -the lodge. P.G. Bro. A. Rennie told members all about the opening ceremony of the Loyal Queen of Otago Lodge, at which lie was present. Formal business being finished, H.G. Bro. Stewart adjourned the lodge to enable the trustees to carry out the evening’s entertainment. The meeting of Loyal Palmerston Lodge, held on Hovember 18, was attended by representatives of Loyal Hand and Heart. Dunedin, Albion, Caversham, Prince of (Wales, Valley, Centenary, Dunbacfc, Prince Alfred, and Band of Friendsbin Lodges, some eighty brethren in nil. Dunedin brethren travelled north by the afternoon’s .train, and returned -home by the midnight .goods. The meeting was 'one of the brightest and best attended held outside the city for a considerable period. The Prov. G.M., accompanied by the Prov. D.G.M. and Prov. Tress., attended officially. The hospitality of Palmerston brethren was lavish, and done full justice to by visiting brethren, who also did their share in the entertaining line. Bros. Bond and Mitchell (violins), Gilliand (accordion), and Scott (banjo) doing yeoman service. The proceedings at the annual summoned meeting of Loyal United Juvenile branch were marked' by great, enthusiasm. H.G. Tim. F. .T. Rosenbrock presided, and welcomed visiting brethren from Loyal Taieri Juvenile branch, who attended for the purpose of conducting the installation, of officers. This ceremony was carried out in a manner which would have been creditable to any adult lodsro. 0.3!. Bro. Craig had control. The District Executive was present, with a full complement; also representatives of all the ■adult city lodges, all of whom niad eulogistic reference to the manner in which the installation ha d -been, carried out. ■Routine business was before the meeting -of Loyal Hand and Heart. Lodge, bold on the 21st Inst. H.G. Bro, Austin presided. Two more members were added to the lodge roll by initiation. P.G.s Hunt and Povntz gave an interesting report of the Dispensary Committee meeting •held recently. Visiting brethren were present. from loyal Albion and Dunedin Lodges. Later an the evening a progressive euchre toumey for a prize donated by the minor jhffiocTß of the lodge was won hr E.S. A. M-Tntosh.

Loyal Dunedin Lodge had a good meeting on Thursday evening last, at which N.G. Bro. M’Allurn presided. Quite n. number of visiting brethren were present, among them Per, Eqq. Bro. P. IV. Staibh, of Loyal Albion. One honorary member was admitted into the order with the usual formalities. During the adjournment brethren participated in a euchre tournament for a trophy provided by the elective officers. Froim some hard-fought games Warden Bro. R. Wilkie emerged a winner.
