RULE OF THE RIFLE
GENERAL SMUTS’S WARNING. Press Association-'-By Telegraph—Copyright. CATE TOWN. October 8. (Received October 9, at 8.45 a.m.) Speaking at Springfontein, General Smuts, in referring to the Stasson case, said that the judges had arrived' at the conclusion that the death sentence was the only one possible. It was a bitter thing to condemn n man to death, but had he not advised the Governor-General as he did ho would not have been worthy of his position. He deprecated the great danger of the tendency in South Africa to refer disputes to arbitrament of the rifle. So long as he had’ the power he would not tolerate the rule of the rifle, and he would not permit extremists to rule the country. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
