WHANGAPE HERE ON FIRST TRIBk Ou her first trip in tho newly* augmented cargo service between Newcastle, Sydney, and South Island ports the' Union Company’s steamer Whangapo arrived at Dunedin this ■morning, and steamed to a discharging berth at the Birch street wharf. Tho Whangapo has been placed in this service as the result of a request made by South Island .merchants for improved shipping facilities. The_ Waikouaiti, which has been engaged in tho trade for some time past, and tho Whangapo will now run a icgular service, visiting Dunedin at about threeweekly intervals. The Waikouaiti’s ports of call are Bluff, Dunedin, and Lyttelton, and tho Whangape will discharge at Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff, in that order. Largo quantities of merchandise from European, Continental, and Eastern ports are discharged at Sydney, consigned to New Zealand ports, and with tho Waikouaiu and Whangapo actively engaged local merchants will receive their goods with very little, delay.
