A DARING ROBBERY
£450 FROM TRAMWAYS OFFICE. STRONG ROOM NOT FORCED. The City Corporation is minus some £450 as the result of a visit by some person or persons .at present unknown to the office of the Tramway Department at the sheds in Market street. The strong room in the office was securely locked by the officer in charge when he left at 11.30 p.m. on Saturday, but at 6.30 the next morning the door was found unlocked, though closed, and investigation disclosed the fact that the bulk of the money forming Saturday’s, takings had disappeared. The thief had left approximately £IOO in small change, either because ho could not carry it, or because its presence in the back portion of the drawers was unnoticed in his hurry. The front door leading to the office was securely fastened, but the side door is not usually locked, as a number of. men are on duty all night in the sheds, which are brilliantly lighted. Whether the thief obtained by some means one of--tho keys to the strong room, or used a skeleton key, is a mystery at present.
