A lecturer, expatiating on the nature of man, remarked that one point of distinction between human beings and the lower animals consisted in capacity for progress. “Man,” he exclaimed, “is a progressive beiim-; other creatures are stationary. Take, for example, the ass. Always and everywhere it is tiie same creature. You have never seen, and you never will see, a more perfect ass than you see at the present moment.”
