OBITUARY

DR JOHN GUTHRIE. [SI’ECIAXi TO THE ‘ SlAß.’j CHRISTCHURCH, August 17. Dr John Guthrie, one of tno oldest medical practitioners of the city, died this morning at the age of seventy-five years. Ho was a particularly well-known figure in Christchurch, though ho had not practised for Gomo years. Deceased was born at Edinburgh, being the son of the late Dr John Guthrie, D.D., of that city. After qualifying as a medical practitioner, Dr Guthrie 'canto to New Zealand in 1875, and commenced tho practice of his profession at Akaroa, later removing _ to Christchurch.. Soon after his arrival in Now Zealand Dr Guthrie married' Miss Hay, of Pigeon Bay. The family has fUiired nrominently in the medical profession. tho late Dr Guthrie who practised, in Lyttelton for many years being a brother of deceased, while also Dr Guthrie’s two sons, John and Robert Neil, axe both well-known Christchurch medical men. A voungcr brother of the late Dr Guthrio is Sir James Guthrie, who recently retired from the presidency of (lie Royal Scottish Academy; and Mrs T. 0. Hay, of Pigeon Bay, is a sister. The late Dr Guthrio was a foundation member of tho Christchurch Savage Club, and a past president. Besides tho sons mentioned, ho loaves one daughter—Mrs Hamish Grant, of Grant’s Hill Station,' Burke's Pass.

Tho death occurred at Balolutha recently of Mr Donald Mitchell, at tho ageof eighty-six years. Deceased came to New Zealand in 1857, end was a farmer at Wangaloa for over forty years. Mr Houston Francis Logan, one of tho first citizens of Wellington, died last week at tho age of eighty-five years. He arrived with his parents in the ship Bengal Merchant in 1840, and tho family was established “on tho beach," and lived there for many a year. For a long period the late Mr Logan kept a grocery establishment in Lambkin quay, opposite tho present Government Buildings. Mr William Thorne, notary public and barrister, died at his residence, Epsom, Auckland, Last week. He spent practically the whole of the seventy-five years of his life in Auckland, where lie was bom on January 24, 1847. Ho was a member, and for some years chairman, of the old Poi> sonby Road Board, and was later a member of the City Council and Harbor Board.
