SOUTHLAND BEATS HA WIFE’S BAY. [Special to the 1 Star.’] INVERCARGILL, August. 16. Excellent overhead conditions prevailed and the attendance was about 4,C00 for the Southland -II awke’s Bay match yesterday, which was won by Southland, after a bright and interesting game, by 11-3. Both teams endeavored to open up tho -game, tho result being a pleasing exhibition. The Hawke’s Bay forwards were heavier, and superior, but tho Southland pack did not play up to the form displayed against Canterbury last Saturday. The scoring opened fifteen- minutes from the kick-off. H. Brown (centre tluvequarter) secured, and after a good rxux passed to tho wing (Diack), who sent m a pass to Strang, the forward -going across between tho posts. Agnew poiivortecl. Southland continued to attack, but with about ten minutes of the spell to go Batchelor followed a kick by . Blake and scored for Hawke’s Bay. Yates failed with tho kick. Half-time sounded with the score; Southland 5, Hawke's Bay 3. Tbs second spell opened with -a great attack by Hawke’s Bay forwards, but they were unable to score. _ Bay kept up the pressure- for the greater part of the spell, hut tho homo defence was very sound. Tho All Black®, just back from Australia, met at Palmerston North yesterday a Manawatu team strengthened by tho inclusion of four of the Wellington University men—Siddells, Trapski, Maffroy, and Troy. Manawatu were aggressive, and scored in two minutes, Siddells getting over, Swaiuson converting. Ovei’-eagerness caused Manawatu to be penalised, and Fitzgerald- kicked a goal. Tho spell ended : All Blacks 16 points, Manawatu 8 points. Donald injured his aixkle, and was replaced by Williams. In the second spell there was a monotonous series of All Black scores, broken by a great dash by Leeder, who intercepted a pass from Beflis and scored. Auckland’s South Island tour opened iuauspiciously at Timaru yesterday, vixen the local forwards outplayed the Northerners, who- were beaten 8-6. Tho first score cams to Auckland before tho game was twenty minutes old, as’fho result of a combined run by M’Manus, Earl, and Thomas, the- last-named getting over; but Ifwerson failed with the kick. WELLINGTON 15 BEATS MARLBOROUGH. ’ Wellington B defeated Marlborough at Blenheim Yesterday by 20 to 8, the .visitors putting on 17 points in the second spell. The Wellington backs showed mag. inficent combination, and were extremely safe with the ball. In the first spell the visitors’ efforts were nullified by the deadly tackling of the Marlborough^forwards._ As the game wore on the local forwards tired, Wellington getting pretty much its own wav, superior telling. Wellington’s score comprised tries by Murray am! Gibson, both of which were converted- byMurphy, an unconverted try by M’Cabe, a penalty goal by Murphy, and a potted goal bv Gibson.
