Leave of absence for some weeks over and above vacations was granted by the University Council yesterday to Professor Park and Mr H. C. Hanson, the former intending to visit Canada-, the States, and possibly England, and tho latter proposing to visit England. Dr W. Marshall Macdonald was yesterday offered tho congratulations of members of the University Council upon his appointment as a vice-president of the Australasian Medical Congress, to bo held in Melbourne during November of next year. Dr Macdonald thanked members, and pointed out that the special honor which, had been conferred upon him was his appointment as president of the section of medicine at the congress.
At yesterday’s meeting of the University Council the "Bcv. Dr Cameron reelected Chancellor, and Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., Vice-Chancellor. The death is announced at Auckland of Mrs Harriet Cossey, aged 101 years. Deceased arrived in New Zealand seventy-five years ago, with her husband, the late William Cossey, and has been settled at Drury for over sixty years. _ At the meeting of the Education Board this morning the chairman (Mr J, Wallace) extended a welcome to the new members, Messrs A. E. Lawrence, L. Sanderson, and G. V. Wood, all of whom, ho said, had had experience in educational matters relating both to primary and secondary schools. . Mr J. Wallace, who has been chairman of the Otago Education Board for the past four years', was this morning appointed chairman for a further period of two years. The Hon. D. T. Fleming, who nominated Mr Wallace, spoke in eulogistic terms of the manner in which Mr Wallace had controlled the affairs of the board during his term of office. Mr Wallace had fulfilled bis duties in a maimer which had been most acceptable to parents and teachers. Mr J. H. Wilkinson declined nomination for the chairmanship because his health was not quite so good after his recent illness.
Mrs H. Lindo Ferguson returned yesterday from a holiday visit to China, Japan, and Canada.
Air J. A. D. Iverach, 8.A., a four-year medical student, is the now president of the Otago University Students’ Association. There were three candidates, aud the issue was settled by ballot. Air Iverach won the AI.G. during tho war. Miss Coralie Kernohan, who is leaving Dunedin shortly to take up a business position in the Hawke’s Bay district, was the recipient of a fine copy of Longfellow’s poems presented by the St. Hilda Alethodist Sunday School teachers last Sunday. Tho superintendent of the school, tho Kev. B. Aletson, who made the presentation, referred to the fact that Miss Kernohan had grown'vup in the school as scholar, .Bible Class worker, teacher, and pianist, and her services had been most appreciated. On behalf of her fellow-teachers Mr Aletson wished their guest every success in the “north, and assured her of the good wishes of the whole church with which she had been identified.
