NAURU ISLAND
ADMINISTRATION DEFENDED. SOWERS OF TARES. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. SYDNEY, August 15. (Received August 16, at 9.25 a.m.). The ‘ Sydeny Morning Herald,’ in a leader headed * Nauru Trusteeship,’ says that the criticism of the Mandates Commission’s administration of the island is rather unfair a,ml unjustified. After reviewing the position, the ‘ Herald ’ adds : “ The truth is, we suspect, that certain trading interests, former suppliers of tho Commonwealth, perhaps, or maybe competitors in other regions, who would like a share in the wealth of Nauru, are trying to exert their influence upon the Mandates Commission so as to create an agitation against Australia and Australian rights. Our just and proper defence against the criticisms of the Commission is that tho re ; sponsible mandatory Power is either the Imperial Council of Prime Ministers or His Majesty’s Government, that our administration measures have been unimpeachable, and any national benefit derived from control of tjje island is recognised as a fair reward for our war effort.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.
