At Linden Lodge’s meeting on the 9th inst., after a short business session, Bro. J. Cunningham gave ah interesting address on ‘ Ancient Maori Customs.’ Bro. Cunningham, who has an intimate knowledge of New Zealand and of the Maori race, proved himself to be a capable lecturer, and his address of an hour’s duration held tho close attention of the audience. Much interest attached to the lecturer’s explanation of the causes of intertribal feuds, of the Avars with tho whites, and the endless litigation due to the complex native land laws; while considerable mirth was provoked by the allusions to tho old-time customs in courtship and marriage. At the conclusion of the address Bro. Cunningham was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

The monthly meeting of the South Otago District Lodge was held on the 10th inst., when, after the usual routine business had been despatched and degrees conferred upon two candidates, important business worthy of being carried forward to Grand Lodge session was discussed, and suggestions as regards remits to be sent forward were passed on to committees to investigate and put in suitable form. Opportunity was taken by the D.D.G.M. to congratulate Bro. F. Wilkinson upon his election to the chair of Grand Secretary, a fitting reward for services rendered to tho order throughout tho jurisdiction of New Zealand during his eight years as assistant to P.G.S.
