MUSIC FOR FOOTBALL MATCHES.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —Having attended most of the outdoor sports held in Dunedin, the football matches in particular, tho absence ft music has been very - conspicuous, and I have taken the liberty to write and suggest that the O.R.F.U. might see its way clear to share a little of its success with tho military bands wo have in Dunedin. Most of us appreciate music, and from what the writer can see, our bands get very little encouragement generally, and if the Rugby Union would carry out the spirit of the true sportsman it would extend its success by offering, say, £2O to £3O to one of our bands to parade- at each important match where the gate would allow it. The three or four bands that we have could take turn about, and the little support so given would help to pay for some of their expenses. Looking at the attendance and the charges, «there should be sufficient to allow for this. I understand that some of these bands practise twice a week, and 1 tho members give their time for nothing, and it, is poor encouragement if they do not get some support from the sports bodies that aie so well patronised by the public The small amount that they might pass on to support the bands would never be missed by them, and the public would appreciate the presence of a band at these pastimes, to say nothing of the assistance it would be to the bands.—l am, rtc.. G.J.W. August 15.
