ARRIVED.—August 11. Westmoreland, s.s. (8 a.m.), 9,512 tons, Deith, from London via Panama and north New Zealand ports, Storm, s.s. (4.25 p.m.), 405 tons, Sharpe, from Wanganui via ports. Waimarine, s.s. (5.30 p.m.), 4,204 tens, Hill, from Newcastle. SAlLED.—August 11. John, s.s. (10 p.m.), 339 tens, Hawick, for Wanganui via ports. August 12. Waipori, s.s. (6.55 a.m.), 1,976 tons, E-ecd, for Greymouth. • The Waimarino arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon from Newcastle. She was berthed last evening to discharge S,(XX) tens of coal for the Railway Department. The Ivaikoura is now expected to arrive at Dunedin to-morrow from Liverpool via northern ports. She will berth at the Victoria wharf to discharge 800 tens of general cargo. The Wingatui,, due at Lyttelton on Monday from Auckland and Wellington, is to be despatched on Tuesday for Dunedin, Blu2, Oamaru, and Timorn. She will return to Lyttelton to load for Wellington and Auckland. The Port Albany is expected at Wellington from New Plymouth via Wanganui on August 15. She will complete loading at Lyttelton, from which port she will sail on August 24 for London via Montevideo. The Opawa, from Auckland, is due at Wellington to-day. She will later call at Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Sydney to continue discharge of her cargo from Montreal and New York. The Union Company advises that the Kaiwarra is to leave Sydney to-day for Fiji and Auckland. The Huddart-Parker Company’s intercolonial passenger steamer Ulimaroa is to leave Sydney to-day for Wellington, where she is duo on Wednesday morning. The, vessel is to sail from Wellington on Friday, the 18th test., on the return trip to Sydney. —. ■

The Waipori completed discharging the remainder of her cargo from Australian, and Tasmanian parte last night, and sailed early this morning for Greymonth. The Storm, which arrived hero yesterday afternoon from Wanganui via ports, is to sail to-day for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Maori arrived at Lyttelton, at 7 a.m. to-day from Wellington, and mails and passengers connected with the 8-45 a.m. express for the south. ATHENIC’S ITINERARY. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion liner is to leave Wellington, on Monday for discharging and loading at Auckland, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Timaru. Sheds due back at Wellington on September 12 to complete her loading, and will sail from there at daybreak on September 17 for -Southampton and London. SEAMEN ON BRITISH SHIPS. : The number of engagements of British and foreign seamen at mercantile marine offices in the United Kingdom last year aggregated 422,445, against 486,977 in 1920, and 604,830 in 1913. These figures give an indication of the failing off in the number of British ships running to-day 'compared with pre-war days. The British seamen employed represented 94.45 per cent, of the total, against 89.59 per cent, hi 1913; foreigners, other than Asiatics and Africans, represented. 3.05 per cent, of the total, against 7.81 per cent.; Chinese 0.6 per cent., against 1.53 per cent.; and other Asiatics and Africans, 1.90 per cent,, against 1.07 per cent. NFAV STEAMER ELLAROO. The Melbourne Steamship Company’s new steamer EUaroo left South Wales on July 22 with a cargo of coal for Karachi, and later will come on to Melbourne to engage in the interstate trade. The EUaroo, which has. been purchased from Norwegian owners, was ‘built in April, 1921, by J. L. Thompson and Co., Sunderland, and her engines are by Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co. Classed ICO A 1 at Lloyd’s, she is of single-deck type, 4,643 tons gross register, measurement capacity 9,600 lons, and a dead-weight capacity of about 7,000 tons, on a draught of 23ft. She has a speed of ten knots, and is equipped for either oil or coal fuel, and with large hatchways, clear holds, double winches and double derricks at each hatch is well adapted for quick handling of cargo. The EUaroo is in charge of Captain Brotherton, who a few months ago brought out ■ from England the company’s new steamer Coolana. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Sailed ; Ngakuta (1.30 p.m.), for Westport _ via ports; Breeze (5.30 p.m.), for Napier. OAMARU, August 12.—Arrived ; John (7 a.m.), from Dunedin. SYDNEY, August 11.—Sailed : Tahiti (12.30 p.m.), for Wellington.
