GALLEY STAFF AND STEWARDS. After Mr Kennedy (for the union) had concluded his case before, tho Arbitration Court at Wellington yesterday m the galley staffs’ dispute, at tho suggestion of the court he wont on to deal with an allied phase of employment on shipboard stewards 1 ’ work. The wages claimed per calendar month varied from £8 for cadets to £lB for second steward. For stewards generally the claim was for £l6 per month and for stewardesses £l2 per month. At the. outset Mr Kennedy submitted, that stewards, should be signed on in the capacity which wero to fill, instead of being graded' first grade, second gradeIn Australia, the different gradings were specifically named. Mr Kennedy submitted comparative figures to show that the pay of stewards in Ne w Zealand was on a a average £2 12s 6d per month below that in the Australian awards. The claims of the union, if successful, would bring the New Zealand pay 4s a. month oyer that in Australia. Tho employers, in their counterproposals. sought to have the wages reduced to £9 per month. LABOR REPRESENTATION COMMITTEE. Thf, animal meeting of the Otago Labor Representation Committee was hekl in the Trades Hall on Thursday. The committee has at' the present time a larger membership than at any time since its formation. The e!cd ion of officers resulted as follows :—Air C. M. Moss, president; Mr F. Jones, vice-president; Mr R. G. M‘Donnell. secretary; Mr W. IV. Batchelor, treasurer; and Messrs A. Morrison, Murrow, S. Gasper, and S. Elston, committee. Mr C. M. Moss was appointed to the National Executive of the New Zealand Labor Party. GENERAL, A very successful gathering'was hekl in the Macandrew Road School Gymnasium last evening, the occasion being the annual social given to the members of the Young Helpers’ League. The first part of the programme consisted of items given by the children. This was followed by a splendid lot of pictures shown by Mr W. Simpson. An abundant supply ot refreshments was dispensed by the president (Mrs W. Wright) and the vice-presidents (Mesdames Lethbridge and Johnston), who were assisted by Mesdames MTndoe, Fox, Burt, and Finder. Miss Hughes has charge of the league, and Miss E. Murray is trea- ; surer. Master Albert Christeson v. ns m ■ most successful collector. The total ■ amount in the boxes was £8 18s, and amounts from other sources will bring it j up to about £lO. Mr A. T. MTndoe, chairman of the school committee, thanked all those who had helped. to make the meeting a Buecess, and at his call three hearty cheers wore given. The monthly meeting of the Macandrew Road School Committee was attended byMessrs MTndoe (chairman), Paine, Burt, Wright, Eraser, M’Kcitch, MTntyre, Fox, and Binder. The head master reported that the average attendance for July was 555. The inspectors had visited the school, and, on tho report being read, it was do- ! cided to congratulate the head master and 1 staff. Miss E.
