RAILWAY AND BUSINESS AGENTS

10 THE EDITOE. ; Sir,—l presume the correspondence in regard to the appointment of a- railway commercial agent has arisen in consequence of the letter addressed by mo to the Minister of Railways, which you published in your issue of the 7th inst. • Now, there seems to mo to have been no jjccasion for the letter signed by the presisjnt, vice-president, and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, which, by the way, should not appear to hear the imprimatur of the chamber, seeing that no meeting even of the executive was called to discuss the question; and I venture to say that the officials of the chamber have failed in their ■duty in not calling a meeting to deal with a matter of so great importance. Aa to the main question, my letter to the Minister is in no way a reflection upon the personality of Mr Bowles or upon his undoubted efficiency and popularity as a railway official. The principle which I and the association of which. I am president stand for is that a commercial agent or adviser to the Railway Department should be actually a man of large commercial experience, whose outlook has not been restricted by official training. In our opinion the official side will he quite well expounded by the official in charge, whoever he may be.—l am, etc., A. E. USJTEEWOOD, President Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association. . August 11.
