ORGAN RECITAL
Mr Robert K. Macfie gave another of his “popular” organ recitals in the Northeast Valley Presbyterian Church last evening. The organist recognises that the average music-lover does not appreciate a too classical programme, and so he arranges his items accordingly; but nevertheless he chooses compositions that are not easy for the organist himself, in that they require the technique and interpretation of a first-class, organist. Mr MacSe’s opening number was Boellmann’s ‘ Suite Gothique,’ which consists of four movements—introduction choral, minuet Gothique, prime, and toccata. Miss F. Simpson then gave Sullivan’s ‘ Lost Chord,’ which was followed by Mr Macfic’s rendering of *L*w»o’ (Dvorak), from ‘The New World Symphony,’ Mr Jas. Paterson contribuied two bracketed numbers—‘ I Feel the Deity Within’ and ‘Arm! Arm! Ye Brave ’ (Handel), being the recitative and aria from ‘Judas Maccabtens.’ Two numbers from the ‘ Venetian Suite ’ (Nevin)— The Rosary ’. and * Gondolier! ’ —and ‘ The Curfew’ (Horsman) were the organist’s next pieces, and in the latter especially was the master touch apparent. The second part of the programme consisted of a solo, ‘Lead, Kindly Light,’ by Miss Phyllis West; two solos, ‘Requiem’ (Homer) and ‘ Harvest ’ (Del Riego), by Mr G. Procter; and four organ compositions. The first was ‘ Povano ’ (Bernard Johnson}, which was followed bv three short pieces of Lemare—‘ The Bee,’ in which the droning and humming were venr effectively sustained; ‘ Elegy in G’; and * Caprice Oriental.' The second item consisted of Dvorak’s ever-popular ‘.Humoresque ’ and Luborviersky’s ‘ Orientaie ’; and the last organ solo was ‘ Offertoire ’ (Driffield). The singing of the National Anthem concluded the recital.
