FIRST GRADE.

GYMNASTIC A v. TECHNICAL OLD BOYS. This match, played 'on the Oval, was a keenly-contested game throughout, and provided the spectators with an attractive display. The ground was in good order, and the weather conditions were all that could be desired. Prom the initial bully Tech, attacked, and Johnstone had an unsuccessful shot. Repeated off-side play by Gymnastic gave Tech, several good opportunities, which, however, tho Gymnastic defence repulsed on each occasion. Give-and-take plqy. followed, and Seelen, making the best of an opportunity that came his way, opened the score with a nice shot. This put Gymnastics on their mettle, and following a good passing rush Hewitt transferred to M'Olintock, who equalised the scores. Hinton commenced a fine forward line attack for Tech., which resulted in a penalty comer being conceded them. This, however, was well saved by Hayward, and Foote transferred play to the opposite end with a long hit. M'Clintock snot,, but the ball struck the cross-bar, and Paul, following in, scored off the rebound. There was no alteration in tho score at half-time.

Shortly after changing over Paul sent in a good shot from a diifficult angle, which beat the Tech, goal-keeper, and increased Gymnastic’s lead to 3-1. Hinton then got possession of the ball, and after a good solo run scored for Tech. From a penalty corner given to Gymnastic M'Clintock was unsuccessful with one of his favorite “scoop” shots, but, following it in, he managed to beat tho Tech, custodian of the " net. From the next bully tho Gymnastic forward line combined in a strong attack, and M'Clintock got possession in the circle and registered another goal with a She shot. Shortly afterwards Tech, were awarded a penalty corner, from which Hinton scored. The game, which was of a very clean and at times spectacular nature, ended : Gymnastic 5 Technical Old Boys 5

For the winners, M'Clintock was very prominent, and. although difficult to ■discriminate, M'Killop and M‘Leod were probably the other most outstanding players. Hinton, Johnstone, and Fifield were the best of the Tech, team, the first-named particularly doing splendid work. The game was efficiently controlled by Messrs C. Whyte (Christchurch) and Wallace.
