ARRIVED.--July 29. John, s.s. (8.30 p.m.), 339 tons, Hawick, from Wanganui via ports. July 31. Storm, s.s. (10.5 a.m.), 405 tons, Sharpe, from Wanganui via ports.

The Port Adelaide, C. and D. steamer, left Colon on July 19, en route from New York to. Australian ports. The Hertford, Federal S.N. Company's steamer, left New York on July 17 for Brisbane,, Sydney, Melbourne,' and Adelaide via Panama. The Canadian Government steamer Canadian Scottish arrived at Moji on July 18 1 from New Zealand and Sydney Alb a cargo of wheat and wool. ' The steamer Honan, D.A.D.G. Line, is scheduled to leave Hamburg on August 5 for Melbourne and Sydney, and she will lie followed on September 2 by the Blue funnel liner Eurylochus. The former vessel will be probably Ihc first unit of the German merchant marine to fly the ox-enemy flag in Port Jackson since the eventful days of August, 1914.

The Wnihaw-a. c-til from Newcastle, is duo at Wellington to-day, and will be followed l iter i:. the week uy the Kaiwarra, similarly laden.

The Kerepeehi arrived at Auckland last Thursday morning from the Great Barrier with about'fifty tong of salved cargo from tiro Wiltshire. It consisted mostly of alkali and caustic soda.

It is reported that the Canadian ■Mariner, from Halifax and New York via Australian ports, is due at Bluff during the second week in August. She wul then call at Dunedin, Timaru, and Lyttelton to complete discharge and loading. The steamer Braunfels sailed from Sydney on July 14 for the United Kingdom or Continent, with tho last full shipment of this season’s wheat from New South Wales. Her cargo totalled 88,481 bags. Of course, some further wheat may be shipped overseas, but tho steamer Braunfels is the last known vessel that lias been chartered to take a full cargo.

The Ramona, is due here to-morrow morning from Groymouth via. Bluff. She will sail about Wednesday for Oamaru, Timaru, Westport, and Greymouth. . Tho Kini left Gisborne on Saturday evening for Wellington and Dunedin. She is due hero on Wednesday morning, and is listed to sail on Wednesday evening for Napier and Gisborne via ports. The Waipori, from Australian ports, Hobart, Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton, is expected lo reach Dunedin about tho end of this week to complete discharge. A London cablegram states that tho White Star liner Zealandic, on route from London lo Australian ports, passed Tcueriffe on July 28. Tho steamer City of Pittsburg, bound from Sydney to the United Kingdom, passed Perim on July 28. WHAKATANE’S ITINERARY. The Whakatano is due at Auckland from Liverpool about August 13, at Wellington, 21; Lyttelton, 24; Dunedin, 28; Nelson, September 1, to discharge Homo cargo. She will load at Napier about September 6, Timaru on tho 11th, Lyttelton on the 15th, and Wellington on the 19th. Tho vessel will sail from Wellington about September 22 for London via Montevideo. KAIKOURA, FROM LIVERPOOL. Tho Kaikoura, from Liverpool via Auckland, Tokomaru Bay, and Wellington, is due at Lyttelton on August. 5, at Dunedin about August 6, and New Plymouth about August 12, to discharge tho balance of her inward cargo. She will afterwards load at Wanganui on August 16, Lyttelton on the 23rd, and Wellington on the 26th, completing to sail finally for London via Montevideo about August 28. HOPE FOR JANNA ABANDONED. The Norwegian barque Janna, which left Sydney last December with a cargo of wheat for Falmouth, is now regarded as lost. The Janna was manned by a Norwegian crew, in tho charge of Captain Lund, and all hope of their safety has been abandoned. It is a remarkable thing that since this vessel left Sydney in December she has not been reported. VALUE OP LOST BARQUE FRANCE. The five-masted steel barque Franco, belonging to tire Cio Francaise de Marino ct de Commerce, which is a total wreck on tiro New Caledonian coast, was built in 1912 at Bordeaux, at a cost of £84,500. During the war the owners could nave sold that fine barque for at least £250,000. The France was certainly a cheap proposition tojbuilfl ji at,J!ls a ton, ESPERANCE BAY ON TRIAL;. Tho Commonwealth Government Line lias received a cable giving particulars of the trial run of the new steamer Espernnco. Bay, one of the latest of tho “Bay” liners built for tho Australian trade. The steamer averaged 18.5 knots per hour overforty miles, and 18.2 knots per hour over 100 miles. The Esperauce Bay will sail from London on August 1 on her maiden trip to Australia WHITE STAR LINE. Messrs Dalgety and Co. report tho following movements of White Star Line passenger steamers: The Ceramic., which left Liverpool on Juno 16, and Cape Town on July 5, called at Albany, Adelaide, and Melbourne. Sho is duo at Sydney to-day. The Euripides, which left London on June 23 for Capo Town and Albany, is duo at Melbourne on August 2, Sydney on August 7, and Brisbane four days after. Tlie Medic, from Sydney via Durban and Cape Town, was due at Southampton on July 28. The Themistocles, which left Brisbane on Juno 24 for Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle, was clue at Durban yesterday, and should arrive at Cape Town on August 4, and London on August 24.

FRENCH SERVICES TO AUSTRALIA.

An improved shipping service in connection with the Messagerics Maritime® (French, mail service) was recently announced bv cable.

According to a cable received by tbs general manager from the head office of the company in Paris, the directors have decided to run on the Australian line, in addition to the Cephee, three new steamers. They are the Villa do Metz, Ville de Verdun, and the ViUo da Strasbourg. These steamers wore constructed in 1920-21 by the North of Ireland! Shipbuilding Company, of Londonderry, and in build and equipment are np to date in every respect. Their tonnage is 7,000 gross and 4,400 not, and they each have a deadweight capacity of 9,000 tons and cubic capacity of 10,500 tons of 40ft. 'They all have limited accommodation for saloon and third class passengers, and are equal to a speed of twelve knots. The route to Australia will be as hitherto—-via the Suez Canal, Colombo, and Fremantle. Arrangements have been made for the steamers to call for cargo at Bordeaux twelve days before leaving Marseilles, and they will also touch in turn at Havre,. Dunkirk, and Antwerp. “Tins,” said the manager, “will provide a new direct service from all French porta for goods for Australia.” FIRE IN RUAPEHU’S BUNKERS. A Press Association telegram from Timaru states that at about 11 o’clock on Saturday night it was discovered that the coal in the bunkers of the New Zea-. land Shipping Company's steamer Ruapehu was on fire. The outbreak was extinguished with the ship's hose, and no material damage was done. WESTMORELAND’S MOVEMENTS. Tho steamer Westmoreland is due at Wellington to-day from London via Panama and Auckland. The vessel will subsequently visit Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete discharge. Sira is due here on August 9, and will afterwards load at Lyttelton, Napier, Gisborne, and Wellington.
