PALOONA’S SAILING CANCELLED.

STOP PRESS ITEMS

A Wellington message (1.53 p.m 1 states that the Palnona trouble is still unsettled. Mr Young, secretary of the Seamen’s Union, said that the men want to make certain that the rating of each department will not be reduced. An attempt was made recently to reduce the manning of ships irrespective of the number signed on the articles, and the men want a clause to conserve their rights The Union Company states that the proposal is a Lir-roaching one which would prevent the reduction of the stokehold crew oven if one boiler were out of commission. The union was notified that the whole matter would bo considered bv the Ship Owners’ Federation at a meeting specially called, and the Union Company offered to fully protect the men on the Paloono. But the proposals were not agreed to,_ and there was no alternative but to cancel tho vessel’s sailing. • [This evidently is later than tho advice sent to tho local office that the vessel would sail.]
