SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. The .South Island boxing championships were opened at Timaru _ last night. _ A record entry was received, numbering thirty-four competitors, of which the following were scratched as being over weight;—Lloyd- (fly-weight), Pyle (ban-tam-weight, Oamaru), O’Neill (welterweight, Groymouth), Pickles (featherweight, Westport), E. Parker (middleweight, Christchurch), Harvey (welterweight, Invercargill), and M‘Mul!an (ban-tam-weight, Dunedin) did not attend. V. Parker (light-weight, Timaru) and MTvenna (heavy-weight, Timaru) forfeited. _All the bouts,were evenly contested, the boxing being of a high standard. A feature was the display of scientific work by T. Griffiths (Dunedin). The only final decided was the light-heavy-weight, Parker (Christchurch) easily beating Stevens (Christchurch). Following are the results:— -Feather-weight.— Armstrong (Christchurch) beat R. Fulcher (Dunedin); A. Pascoo (Groymouth) beat W. J- Sycamore (Invercargill). Semifinal: W. Drew (Oamaru) beat T. Armstrong (Christchurch). —Middle-weight.— L. O’Neill (Greymouth) beat’ H. North (Dunedin), the referee stopping the fight in the final round. —Heavy-weight. — A. H'Cormack (Ashburton) beat A. Smith (Oamaru). —Welter T. Harris (Dunedin) beat A. Thompson (Christchurch): J. Stewart (Timaru) beat Griffiths (Westport). —Light-weight. — L. M'Donald (Dunedin) beat J. Nelson (Greymouth). —Fly-weight.— ■T. Griffiths (Dunedin) beat W. V. Hawell (Christchurch). The championships will be concluded this evening. PROFESSIONAL CONTEST DRAWN. The professional light-weight boxing match of fifteen rounds, at Auckland last evening, for a purs© of £l5O, Keenan ■(Auckland) against Hannah (Hawke’s Bay), resulted m a draw. It was a fast, exciting contest.
