Walden, a well-known amateur runner, appeared before the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last night to answer charges of having on various occasions between October and March in Australia competed at athletic meetings _ under an assumed name. Walden denied the allegations, but alter an inquiry, by the centre had been held he was declared to have forfeited his amateur status. . A lady, whose name the chairman requested should not he published, gave evidence aa to having seen Walden running at a night meeting'of the Victoria Athletic Club, near Melbourne, on February 9. Walden had run on that occasion, she said, in a cash event under the name of C. Walls. , . , Walden flatly contradicted the lady s statement, and declared that he had never run in any event in Australia, either amateur or professional. The chairman produced a letter from the secretary of tlje Victoria Athletic Proprietary, Ltd., who stated that Walden had run on a proprietary ground out of Melbourne, and had, he believed, also run at Stawell.
