MOSGIEL NOTES

[Fbom Our Own Correspondent,] The concert arranged in aid of_ tho Taieri Pipe Band came off last night, when there was a crowded attendance, and the entertainment proved one of the best ever given in the local hall. The programme consisted of Scottish songs and dances, and the pleasure it gave tho audience was evidenced by the hearty applause and frequent recalls. Tho singers were Misses Annie Duff .(Christchurch) and Bessie Denford (Caversham),_ Messrs W Mackenzie (Dunedin), C. Reekie (Dunback), arid Robert Waterson. Dances were ’riven by Misses Beulah King, A. Moore? V. Paterson, M. Gall, Budge, and Hungerfoixl. Miss M'Keozio played a violin solo, and the band played selections at the commencement of tho prooranirao, and, prior to the concert, in front of the hall. Mr George Hearns was a host in himself with his comic songs. Miss Laura Browne was the accompanist, and in her duties was assisted by Mrs Mnnro and others. An enjoyable dance followed the concert. A nice little ceremony took place this week at the new home of Miss Charters. Alter spending many years on the farm at Ury Park, Miss Charters has retired into Mosgiel, and many of her friends assembled at her new house and presented her with a token of esteem,_ wishing her many years of happiness in her retirement. Some of the ladles present added to the pleasure of tho afternoon by singing a few songs. We "arc getting a full share of tho hard frosty weather. Many are of tho opinion that the frost has not been so severe for over twenty years. There were many complaints last summer, when gardens were in full bearing, about tho prevalence of slugs and grubs that damaged vegetables. If any survive this _ severe frost they must bo deep down in the ground at present.
