APPRENTICES AND THE BONUS

THE COURT'S SUGGESTION

[Pita United Paisa Association.]

May 15,

Id tho Arbitration Court, Mr Lightfoot, representing the Labor Department, drew attention to the position of apprentices. The lowest weekly wage (he said) was-15s. In some cases no bonus had been given, and in tho majority of cases only Is had been allowed.

His Honor said that the court had power to review tho bonus and basic wage. Supposing the court said that in all probability it considered 14s 6d as the new standard rate, and it could be shown that apprentices were receiving only 15s without bonus, that would make a ground for applications for a reduction of 6d instead of l.s 6d. Ho was afraid that applications would have to be made to vary the order of reference, for the terms differed so much that tho court could not make a general order, Mr Lightfoct thought that His Honor’s suggestion would meet the case.
