From the fast-diminishing remnant of old Otago diggers another has dropped off. -Mr John Donaldson, who died at the Lawrence Hospital on April 22, at the age of seventy-six years, was a worthy example of that sturdy type—perhaps the, best type —of worker the world has ever seen, for they were manly arid independent, courageous and adventurous, and in their pioneering they laid flic foundations of order and justice. Mr Donaldson was born at Fellar. in Shetland, and was a sailor till about twenty-five years of age, when ho settled down in New Zealand as a. miner. !Io worked on Gardiner’s diggings at Beammiiit. and in later years followed the dredging in Otago, qualifying as master, and having charge in turn of tho Happy Valley, VVetlierstoncs, Waiipori, and Tuapeka Elat dredges ; then taking a turn on the West Coast, afterwards returning to work Adams’s dredge at Wnitahnna. At his funeral the church service was con duck'd by the Rev. .-V. O. Button, and Bro. R. C, Moore road the Masonic service. Many old friends attended.
