OBITUARY

AN OLD COLONIST. [Special to the ‘ Stak.’l An old colonist, Mrs Delia O’Grady (nee Hynes), died yesterday morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs .). S. Tullock, Woodbridge street, Cashmere (Christchurch). She was eighty-throe years of age, arid was a native of Galway, Ireland. Site arrived at Dunedin with her husband, the late Malachi O'Grady, in 1864. They resided for fifty years in Milton, and later moved to near Oama.ru, and then to Christchurch. She was practically the last of the old identities about Milton and Oamani. Her husband died sixteen years ago. Mrs O’Grady leaves five sons and four daughters, besides fifty grand-chil-dren and thirty great-grandchildren. Mr Andrew Mountstephen Labatt, whose death occurred at Auckland a few days ago, was one of the most prominent cricketers in Canterbury in the late eighties and early nineties, when lie played in many interprovincinl matches. About 1884 he wont to Auckland, where ho also took a prominent, part in cricket, representing the, province, attaining in 1898 the position of captain of the Auckland United Club. The late Mr Labatt was a, son of the Rev. Andrew Tyrrell Labatt, M.A., of Swindon, Wiltshire-, and was horn in London forty-nine roars ago. Ho, was educated at Hurstpierpoint and I Ardinglcy Colleges, and later at St. Edward’s -School, Oxford. Before leaving for New Zealand in 1887, ho had attained & prominent place in football and cricket at St. Edward's. During the Great IVar he had four years’ military service, and was on board the transport Tahiti when the influenza epidemic carried off so many soldiers. He leaves a. widow, four eons, and a daughter, all of whom now rondo in Queensland. Mr F. H. Labatt, of Christchurch, is a. brother of the deceased.
