The Chalmers Fund Committee allocated £250 for a motor truck for Mr Chalmers, and invested £1,250 for the family. On the suggestion of Chalmers, £oOO was awarded to Beauropaire (iho champion swimmer) for assisting in the rescue at the Coogce shark tragedy. [On February 5 Michael Coghlan, a prominent member ol the Coogoo Life-sav-ing Chib, was killed by a shark while swimming in the surf. His death was witnessed by a crowd which had assembled to watch the surf carnival. J. Chalmers, a returned soldier, swam to Coghlan’s rescue while the shark was still attacking him, and gut him free. Beaurcpairc then went lo assist, and brought tho injured man ashore, where ho succumbed to frightful wounds. A public fund was opened to recognise tho bravery of Chalmers, and ho was recommended for the Albert .Medal,]
