Speaking at tiro anniversary of the- landing of Contain Cook, Chief Justice Cullen, referring to Australia’s progress, said : “Wo can look the whole world in tho face and owe no compliment to anybody, high or low, who thinks Australia has anything to ho ashamed of.” Ho said he mentioned this because tho suggestion had been made that Australia should try to forgot her early days, because tho lucre people who went there went involuntarily. Ho pointed out That it was not the worst of Great Britain’s criminals who were sent to Australia- —only the best of the offenders were sent, to give them a chance to make good in a new land. Some of tho best of the population got ; a now start under this system, and he appealed to his hearers to put those foolish jabberers in their places who said that Australia had to be perpetually reminded that in tho first fleet were some who would rather iicive remained behind.
