S.O.J.C. : SECOND DAY. [Special to tu* ‘ Star.’] ThAIARU, April 29. Liglit showers foil up till midday on the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting, but then cleaved off well,, and there was a big attendance. The course was not affected by the rain, and again limes were fast. The starting was not as good as on the opening day, but little fault could _ bis [omul with it. The racing was intcmsling, though the .steeplechase, was robbed of much interest owing to Jua.il and Calma falling. Neither O’Connor nor M'Chesney was -hurt, though the former got a_ good shaking. Stringency was a strong tip for the Trial Handicap, but Q uarrclsome won easily. Jada, who was aim well backed, ran fourth. Bon Spec was backed as if ho could not lose the Pnreora Handicap, but Mantua again proved his downtall, and rotinliod nearly the limit dividend. Hagan’s stable brought off a surprise by winning with Weird in the Beaconsfield Handicap, in which Gunlayer was made a £2 better favorite than Dame Straitlace. The general opinion was that Uacontenr was second by half a length, and there was a slight demonstration against the judge for placing Sir Ceo. Clifford's filly second, Samnm was ridden a bad race, and finished fourth very fast. Songbird proved that he is an exceptional colt by winning the Autumn Handicap in Imin 39 2-ssec with 0.8 in the saddle, am! was cheered on returning to scale. Twinkle ran badly. Solway was expected to win the April Stakes, but Boskcr Boy, who nearly fell on hie head at tho start on tho first day, just managed to beat Balefire, who finished last in tho same race on Friday. In the last race tour Southlanders started in a field of six, and the two northernowned horses finished first and second, though Lady Blissful, with a good run, should have beaten them both. Whipping Boy registered his first win for Sir Geo. Clifford at a meeting. The totalise lor returns wore £20,557 for the day, against £23,179 for last year, making a total for the meeting- of' £57,514 10s, against £44,951 10s last year.
