THE BEEF MARKET

LOS BOX, March 24,
In an interview with tho Australian Press a icpreson-tativo man says that the principal causes of the present deplorable position of tho beef market is a war of pricefl between the Argentine exporters and tho flooding of tho market with Argentine moat. Until quite recently the Argentine ohippors’ losses had been colossal. If the present reported endeavors to arrive at. an agreement woro successful shiomonts will be considerably -dooreasecTimmediately, and prices wijl rise. The removal of Vestey’s 125,000 quarters would relievo tho market, but tho effect would bo only temporary, If the ship owners reduced the freight by J-d per lb and tho Australian Government gave -]d bonus it would undoubtedly greatly help the producers; but bonuses .and subsidies were only expedients—something much more drastic was required. Ho suggests that tho British Government should he urged to enforce immediately tho recommendation of the Interdepartmental Committee on Meat Supplies m 1919 to grant licenses to all meat importers. Thus it would bo possible to control arrivals here and prevent a continuance of the dumping of foreign meat, which is a serious menace to British producers, not only here but throughout the Empire,—A, and N.Z, Cablo.
