The Hon. George Fowlds is paying a short visit to Otago. Mr Fowlds arrived in town last evening from Christchurch, where he had been attending the Congregational Union, of which ho is a past president. He goes on to Mataura tomorrow; returning early next week and spending a few days in this city. Asked by one of our representatives if he had any intention of contesting a seat at the coming election, Mr Fowlds gave an emphatic negative, adding that ho would not again enter the political arena under tho existing electoral system. Mr John M'Nair, for years assistant district railways engineer at Dunedin, has left for Auckland. Ha Is succeeded at Dunedin by Mr H. W. Beasley, from Ohakune.

Miss M. Davies has been appointed matron of tho Palmerston North Hospital, in succession to Miss M‘Lagan (retired). The appointee received her' early training at Palmerston North, and thence she went

to Otira Gorge, and then to Akaroa. She

had a lengthy war service, being two years at the casualty clearing station in. France. On her return to New Zealand she nursed at tho Trentham Military Hospital, but lately she has been in private practioa Mr and Mrs D. R. Theomin (Dunedin) and Miss Theomin. who have been touring tho West Coast and Nelson, are at present in Christchurch.

Mr Harold Tanner has been appointed Consul for Finland at Sydney, with jurisdiction over New Zealand.

Mr T. Hamilton Murray has been appointed a Government inspector of machinery. » Mr J. L. Palcthorpe, deputy registrar of births, deaths, and marriages at Auckland, has been promoted to registrar at Wellington. Mr C. P. B. Tripe, school dented officer at Wellington, has been transferred to Christchurch.

Or Taverner, chairman of the Finance Committee, is on leave, being not very well, and has gone to Queenstown for a change. Mr Harold Browning and Mrs Browning, having concluded their visit to England, were at last advices in Melbourne.

Ho came to New Zealand by tho Zealandia in 1873, having previously been in the police force in Cornwall, England. Ho was for many years sergeant in charge of North Dunedin, retiring a few years ago. Ho joined the force in 1873, and was seventy-five years of age. * Mr John Baird Thompson has been appointed. Under Secretary of Lands in succession to Mr Brodrick, who is retiring on superannuation.
