A lawyer was retained ns counsel for a man who stepped in a- hole in the street and broke his leg. An action was brought against the authorities for the sum of £SOO, and the lawyer won the case. The authorities appealed to the Supreme Court, but again the verdict was in favor of the lawyer’s client. After settling up the claim the solicitor handed his client a half-crown piece. “What is this for?’’ asked the man. “That’s what is left after taking out my fee, the cost of appeal, and other expenses, ’’ answered the lawyer.
