Warlove is suffering from a damaged foot, and may have to be spelled, while Clean Sweep is also amiss. DEATH OP LEN HEGARTY. Our Christchurch correspondent wires: General regret will bo felt in sporting circles throughout the Dominion at the news of the death of the well-known jockey Len Hegarty, which occurred at Westport Hospital this morning, lie loft early this week for tho West Coast in charge of Falstatl, but on his arrival ho was taken ill, and his death came suddenly. The immediate cause was spinalmeningitis, but is is probable it was traceable to a fall which ho had while schooling a, horse at Riccarten on tho cvq of the Grand National Meeting last August. He made a somewhat slow recovery from that mishap, and he had never really regained his best health, Tho deceased jockey commenced riding on the flat about twenty years ago, but for some years he had boon best known as a rider in hurdle and steeplechase events. He was a game horschan, whose services were at everyone’s disposal for schooling jumpers; and during the lost few r years lie had handled many horses of all kinds at Riccarton. Hegarty spent a few years in Melbourne, where he rode with considerable success in jumping races. Shortly after his return to Riccarton he took service with T. H. Gillott, irp whose employ ho remained until recently. Among his successes in big jumping races were; the Grand National Hurdle Handicap on Sir Solo, a-nd Lincoln Steeplechase on Merry Lad, while he war, associtcd with Mnnawapango in practically all his races after tho All Black gelding came to Riccarton, Besides being a firstclass jockey, Hegarty was a keen footballer, playing in last year’s Canterbury Rugby football competitions in the colors of the Riccarton Football Club. 'For several years ho captained tho .South Island Jockeys’ team against the North Island, and was always a hard player from whistle to whistle.
