LATE SHIPPING
NAUTICAL INQUIRIES. [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 23. A nautical inquiry was held to-day concerning the stranding of the schooner Valin arid on Farewell Spit on February 16. Evidence was given that the sandbanks in the locality shifted according to the change of the weather, two master mariners stating that tho chart for this reason could not altogether bo relied upon. Tho safety margin allowed' by tho master of tho Valmario was considered by witnesses to be clear of the sandbanks shown on the chart. Similar observations regarding tho shifting sands wore mad© at a previous stranding. Tho court reserved its decision. A nautical inquiry is also being hold into the- collision forty-five miles oft Lyttelton Heads on February 26 between tho ferry steamer Maori and, the auxiliary schooner Zita. ■ SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
