At the meeting of tho executive of the Canterbury Rowing Association held at Christchurch, last night a lei ter was received from tho Union Rowing Club (Christchurch) enclosing a copy of a letter scut by tho club to the Wanganui Regatta Association in reference to tho champion pair oar race, and asking it to bo forwarded to the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association. The President said tho Canterbury Association could do nothing, as the. umpire’s decision was final. Tho rules relating to racing were conflicting, but one laid it down emphatically that the umpire’s decision must be final. It was decided to forward the letter to tho council of the association in Wellington. * Mr Ebert said tho umpire should undoubtedly have disqualified the crew responsible for the foul, and that was where he failed in his duty. Mr Nightingale said ho had heard from one good authority that there was a- lot of money on the race, and that the Wanganui crows were heavily backed to win tho four championships. It was, he added, most undesirable that the gambling clement should be introduced into amateur rowing.'

Mr Ebert said the umpire should have given his decision promptly, and not four hours afterwards.

That was Hho position at present. Tho Railway Department might reconsider tho matter of charges, while there was a required definite offer in writing from the Union Company. During tho discussion it was urged that for the next Dunedin Meeting at least mom hors should club together and make the heat a success. _ Tho matter was held over, the secretary in the meantime to got fuller particulars from tho Union Company.
