NEW ZEALAND V. IMPORTED LINES
TO BELIEVE UNEMPLOYED DISTRESS. [Speciai, to THE ‘StAII.’] CHRISTCHURCH, March 22. Tho local officer in charge of tho Department of Industries and Commerce wrote to the Drainage Board stating that “ every encouragement should ho given to fostering the purchase of goods made in New' Zealand when prices at least aproxi* mate those quoted for imported lines, and more especially just now, to relieve tho distress caused by unemployment. Should you have any doubt as to whether certain goods are being made in this country, please address inquiry to tho Department of Industries and Commerce, Christchurch, and you will bo given tho necessary information promptly.’’ .This question (wires our Christchurch correspondent) has arisen owing to an order for piping having been plactxl outside New Zealand by ivlocal body in Dunedin when piping of just as good' quality was being manufactured locally. Tho protest of tho Dunedin ironmasters eventually directed the order to Dominion manufacturers. The board decided to take all New Zealand goods that were of tho earne quality and the same price as imported goods.
