SHEARERS’ AWARD
INTERPRETATION SOUGHT AND GIVEN.
An .application was recently made "by tho Inspector of Awards (to the Arbitration Court for an interpretation of sub-clause g of clause 3 of the Otago and Southland shearers and shed hands’ award. This sub-clauso reads: “In addition to the above minimum rates, there shall be paid a bonus of 2s 2d (less 20 per cent.) per day for each day on which tho worker is engaged on shearing, unless and until the court shall otherwise order.”
The question put by tho inspector was: Is the above bonus payable lor a day when a shearer shears, say, two sheep, to ascertain whether the sheep are dry? Tho opinion of the court has now been delivered by the president (Mr Justice Frazer), who says: The bonus is not payable where tho shearing done is in the nature of a tost only.
