N.S.W. GENERAL ELECTION

In the list of candidates nominated on February 21 to compete for ninety seats almost every walk of life is represented, including a hair specialist, medical practitioner, market gardener, wharf laborer, pickle manufacturer, chauffeur, bookmaker, ostrich farmer, news vendor, baker, greengrocer, fruiterer, and hotelkeeper. One of the candidates for Bathurst described himself an a legislator. Of the 308 candidates, ninety-fout carry tho banner of tho Coalitionists, eightynine represent Labor, and forty-five the Progressive. Party. There are a surprising number of other candidates who are not classified, and those, who total seventy-three,,, are grouped as Independents. Then there are five Democrats; while Mr A. B. Gardiner represents Independent Labor, and Mr W. F. Marks describes himself as "Soldier-Nationalist." Tho number of, nominees for country scats has occasioned considerable surprise, and it is clear that tho I'rogves.sivo onslaught is responsible for this. For Sydney there are no fewer than twenty-five aspirants', 'twenty of whom 'will have to be disappointed; and there are twentytwo nominated for Eastern Suburbs. Newcastle has attracted seventeen candidates, which is the greatest number outside tho metropolitan area. There are very few women candidates, tho list providing only Miss P. Stanley, one of the five selected Coalitionists to contest the Eastern Suburbs, and Miss Clara M. Wilson, an Independent, among thirteen others seeking the .suffrage of Western Suburbs.

Some well-known names are those of Sir C. Rosenthal, who is contesting Bathurst; Mr J. Baddoley (Labor), lately president of the Coal Employees' Federation, who is in the list for Newcastlo; Mr R. D. Meagher, an ex-Speaker and ex-Lord Mayor, as an Independent for Eastern Suburbs. Sir Benjamin Fuller, tho wellknown theatrical manager, is standing as an Independent for'Sydney. N
