MELBOURNE, .March 17, Tho Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Now Zealand Minister of Customs, reached Melbourne on Wednesday after a busy week in Sydney meeting deputations and discussing tariff matters generally. At_tho Victorian border lie was met by the Con-troller-General of Customs and tho Now Zealand! Trade Commissioner (Mr Manson). Mr Stewart spoke at a Chamber ol Commerce luncheon on Thursday, when he had a splendid ifeceptkm, and created a, very favorable impression. Ho has received a number of invitations to _ad dress manufacturers, members of the University, and others.
He opened Ins negotiations on Thursday, He rejected the Australian proposal for a mutual exchange of the British preferential tariff, making counter-propceafe to the Australian Government which are now being considered.
