Not only historical societies but quite ordinary folk are rediscovering tho fact that Robin Hood, the outlaw of Sherwood Forest, is buried at Xirklees, near Huddersfield. The story is that in 1867 Robin Hood, then at the age of 87, made his way to the Prioress of Kirkleo to bo “blooded” for his pains. This she did so effectually that Robin had only sufficient strength left to summon Little John by the blast of his horn and to shoot from tho upper window of tho Gatehouse an arrow to indicate the place of his burial. Tho grave is now strongly barred to keep “souvenir merchants” away.
