OTACO BRAN Cl ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Society of < Accountants was held in the. New Zealand E.v press Company's Board Room last e'eiij'ng. Mr J. CL ‘Patterson (president) in Lie chair. There was a fair attendance cl members. ANNUAL REPORT. Tho principal clauses of the annua! report road as follows In accordance with a suggestion oi the Council of the. Society mV D. CL Clark (Commissioner of Taxes) visited the various business centres of tho Dominion, and gave addresses explaining tho provisions of Lie Land and Income- Tax Acts. the meeting in Dunedin was held in May under L.o ansoices of the society, in conjunction with tho Chamber of Commerce. There was a crowded attendance oi: bus ■ myi and others interested, and Air dear and valuable address and Ins re:;*’ answers to tho various points and questions raised were much appreciated. It has been felt by very many who have had experience in taking boys from secondary schools into employment in offices that the education was very deficient as a preparation for the work they were taking up, and that more might bo done during their later school years to fit them for business careers. That tho matter is worthy of consideration lias been recognised by others interested in, or responsible for, the secondary 7 education of boys in Dunedin, and - several conferences have been held between! representatives of the High Schools Board, the Chamber of Commerce, and our local committee lo discuss the best methods that might be adopted to bring about more, satisfactory results in this direction. The committee trusts that these conferences will result in something useful being done. It will lie known to members that the Government contemplates the revision of the Companies Act, and a draft Bill ureparod by Air Justice Hosking is to bo circulated during the present session of Parliament, so that those interested may have an opportunity of making suggestions for alteration or improvement. Our council is in communication with the various local committees, inviting suggested amendments with a view lo placing the, society’s recommendations before the Minister nf Internal Affair-’. The committee takes this opportunity of urging members to send in any suggestions in relation hereto the secretary. Tho Chairman commented briefly on the annual report, and moved its adoption.—Mr Farquharson seconded the motion, which was carried.

OFFICE-BEARERS. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows :—Committee—Means P. B. Foote, James Brown, James Hogg, H. E. Spence, and J. Greenfield ; auditor, Mr H. Mitchell. It was decided in place on record the branch’s appreciation of the valuable work done by Mr Mitchell, the auditor. PRESENTATION. A clause, of the animal report rend as follows ; —lt was with sincere regret that the committee, along with members nf the society in Otago generally, learned that Ah’ Jamas Brown had definitely decided not to allow 7 himself to be renominated to the council. Mr Brown has acted as one of our representatives over since tho foundation of the society, was intimately associated with its initiation amid the many difficulties that surrounded its formation and subsequent successful development, and lias filled the office of president of tho society with honor and distinction. Tho best thanks of the. members are due, to Mr Brown for his long and invaluable services as ono of our representatives. Though ho has retired from the council we still hope to have the benefit of Ids assistance and interest in connection with the local branch.

Tho Chairman moved (he following resolution—“ That this annual meeting of tho Otago branch of tlu\,Now Zealand Society of Accountants desires, on the occasion of the retirement of' Air James Brown from tho position of one of the Otago representatives to tho council, to place on record its high appreciation of the great services rendered to the branch and to the society generally 'by Air Brown during his eleven years’ term of office, dating from tho establishment of tho socily. It assures him of the high regard and esteem in which he is hold by all the members, and trusts that the society may still for many years to come have tho benefit of Ins valued counsel and assistance.” He then presented Air Brown with a group photograph of the council. Air James Hogg seconded the motion, and Messrs C. R. Owen, Peter Barr, and Walter Green also expressed appreciation of Mr Brown’s work. Mr Brown suitably replied. VALUATION OF STOCKS. Mr Peter Barr addressed members on ‘ Tho Valuation of Stocks Under Present Conditions.’ His remarks were followed by a general discussion.
