D.J.C. SPRING MEETING

First Day.—Thursday. A calm grey day at Wingatni. _ The course was sound and not at all slippery after the rain—just the going that owners and trainers really like, as easy on tho horses. The attendance did not eeem to increase very much after tho opening, and that it was not abo -e tho average is suggested hy the fact that Air W. F. . NOTES BT OLD IDENTITY. Staff Officer was tho outsider of the field for tho Hurdle Race, _ Word had evidently gone round that bo had wen showing lameness. Not often do wc sec n. ton weight in a hurdle race made so much U3O of ;ifi Dylans was. Ho disputed the load all tho way. It socmcd, also. Hut Humphries, his rider, made too sure of it in tho straight. As the rsoo was run it was all in Wliipomd’s fuynr. Good Start had a clear lead when ho tell. He appeared to take a chance once or twice before he fell. r , Tho rush that made Tho Heaver a not favorite for the Maungatua Handicap was because Emerson had the mount. Glcntruin’fi -backers, however, were not shaken in their faith, and there was money for ■Silent King. The race was barely interesting. Galway snatched an initial ad- : vantage; hot The Ik aver ran past him alius leisure Imfc-io two furlongs wen* , covered, and for the rest of tho journey ; the favorite was whisking his tail am! casting derision on hia opponents, outstayed all but the winner, coming from away back. Hoven likely two-year-olds weighed out for tho Fourteenth M‘Lcan Stakes. Sir George Clifford's bracketed pair, Swallowflight’ and Balderdash, though made tho favorite pick, did not impress the experts so much as tiro Chokcboro youngsters usually do. They are light chestnuts, and look -looking in substance. Hod Kris took tho fanev as a very likely sort wh-on ho in ready/ Kilroe also pleased the observers. Wartuiie seemed to bo well prepared, and tho crowd liked her when they saw Emcr(son climb into the raddle. Prosperity ' showed up best in tho preliminary, and thus draw the attention of investors. Tho start was quite a fair one after some flightincss at tho post. Wartime bepm quickest, and led for more than hall a furlong, when Balderdash was driven to the front. The call upon her by Ludlow seemed to be resented byg the filly, for slie bounded and) bucked- violently, threw her rider, and fell, presumably by crossing her logs, though nobody can actually say what caused her to come down. In some eirnnge way she screwed herself under the rail, and emerged on the inside track. The accident did not interfere with any of the others. Prosperity immediately challenged Wariune, and they went on clear to light onto good finish, in which Prosperity won by half a length. Tho time, 60|sec. is, about the average. Nones won in 1914 in 49sec. That is the record for tho race. Prosperity is by Bonifonn from Peace, daughter* of Tho Officer and the Dreadnought mare Content. Mr I. G. Duncan bred the filly. Wavlo-vo and Macduff set out together to make the pace in the Margie! Handicap, in which Mr Wood effected a good start at the first attempt. Macduff tired- before reaching the straight, and Radial then took second place. Elms and Clean Sweep finished fast; but neither of this pair nor Radial could threaten Warlove, who won in good- style. Bonnie Maid and Miss Muriel were txith staying on at tho end of the race, and; Rorke’s Drift pan well. H. Young was afterwards cautioned for dismounting without- orders from Clean Sweep. J. Andrews, rider of Miss Murid,

was officially asked to explain why ho had twioo checked the filly—in going out of tho straight and again at the seven furlongs—and ho answered that he had to in order to steady her, ns oho was nearly down on each occasion. The owner - . Mr R. Acton-Adams," told tho Judicial Committee that he was satisfied Andrews rode honestly, and the committee resolved that no action was necessary. Pluto’s win in the Trial Stakes was ridiculously easy. It was his first, win, but will not bo his last.

The Electric Handicap was a, falecly-mn race. Tho haudicapper will no doubt treat it as such in his corning work. The start was ragged to bogin with. Then- Miss Camouflage was interfered Palestrina and Meteorite wore slow in beginning, and Hineamnru got into a bad position. I take no notice of the result, except as showing that Corn Bigs is a fine bold galloper, with plenty of dash. Dave Wilson’s stable followed _np its success with Cbm Rigs by landing the Taioma Handicap with _ Kerb —her first win, She, like Corn Rig?, is by Markhope. Sunny Loch let Twinkle lead into Hie straight in the October Wylter, then went, away for tho expected winy. but he had to be kept going to stall off Kilcnllen.
