MOSGIEL NOTES

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

The Taien benefited considerably by the rains early in the week. All vegetation and grass are showing up in their spring garb. Quito a gloom was cast over the town at the' news of the death of Mr G. F. Hendry (only son of our respected townsman, "Mr Malcolm Hendry), and a descendant of one of the earliest families to take up a home .in Mosgiel. The deceased young man had a brilliant career as a journalist, and still greater achievements by him were looked forward to. His body was brought to Mosgiel and buried in the East Taieri Cemetery. Much sympathy is felt for his parents and members of the family. . The annual social of the Mosgiel Presbyterian Church, held Mast evening, was Oi very successful affair. The Rev, I). Cakler presided over tho gathering, and referred to tho work of the past year. Tho Rev, Mr Fordyce, of tho West Taieri Church, gave a brief address, urging members to still greater achievements in church work than those chronicled by the reverend chairman. The choir sang some anthems, and soloists, both local and visiting, delighted the assemblage with their singng. Supper was served at the close of the programme. In tho course of the evening the chairman presented. Mr John Hamilton with a fountain pen from the Sunday school teachers in recognition of his services as librarian to the Sunday school. Tho Taieri County Council granted the request of the St. Clair Golf Club to open that portion of the district road at the junction of York road into section 40, Ocean Beach, for the, purpose of a water supply to the pavilion from the city supply. Tho invitation of tho _ West Taieri Soldiers* Memorial Committee to tho Taieri County Council to bo present at the unveiling ceremony at Outran! on October 8 next was accepted at the monthly meeting yesterday.
