WOOL SHIPS FOR LONDON
TWO ON THE WAY: ONE TO SAIL, INTERESTING LACS EXPECTED Two larfcc sailing vessels, laden with wool and tallow, are now on the way from Now Zealand to London. The French five-masted, barquo Franco sailed from Wellington on the morning of September 5, and the We!ling-lon-owned four-maried barquo Hewn, formerly known as the Alice A. Leigh, sailed from, Lyttelton at 11 a.m. to-day. The Rewa has thus given the France a full week’s start- on the. long run to the Homo port. Tho French ship Vereingetorix, also wool-laden is lying in the stream at Wellington ready In leave for London, and if she gets away within the next day or two there is a prospect of a good race between tho throe big sailing ships. The France is the largest sailing vessel in the world, and is of tons gross register. She came from Newport (Wales) it Lyttelton with a cargo of coal, and loaded her freight for Ixmdon at Lyttelton and Wellington. Tlie Rewa is of 2,817 ions gross, and is in good trim for sailing. Her mailer, Captain R. Kennedy, who has never in his long career in sailing ships been known to miss any chance of making a passage, may be confidently relied upon to push his fine ship along. It will certainly not he his fault if tho Rewa does not head her French rivals into the English Channel some time in December. Tho Yercingctorix is a full-rigged ship of 1,988 tons gross register. She sailed from Noumea early in April last, and put into Papeete on April 23, and sailed again on Juno 9 for Wellington, where she arrived on Jdv 19. _ The Rewa finished her loading at Lyttelton on Friday. Her > argo cmnprites about 14,000 bales, of wool and 400 casks of tallow, in addition to sundries. This is said to be tho largest cargo of wool over taken by a sailing vessel from Lyttelton.
